The Grave Of William F. Cody, Buried On Lookout Mountain Above Golden In 1917, And A Museum Opened In 1921 Beside It. Cody, Wyoming Has Disputed The Burial Place For A Century, And The Grave Was Covered With Concrete In 1948. · Golden, Colorado

William F. Cody died in Denver in January 1917 and was buried five months later on Lookout Mountain, on a rock terrace looking out over the plains he had crossed as a young man and the mountains beyond. His widow said it was what he wanted. Cody, Wyoming - the town he founded and which carries his name - has never accepted that, and the argument has run for a century, complete with a persistent story that the grave was covered with tons of concrete in 1948 because Wyoming might come and take the body. The museum beside it opened in 1921 and holds his guns, his show posters, Sitting Bull's bow and a great deal of Wild West material, along with an honest treatment of what the Wild West show was and what it did to the people it depicted. The view is free, the grave is free, and between them they are half the reason people drive up Lookout Mountain at all - a hundred miles of plains and Front Range from a terrace you do not need a ticket to stand on.

987 1/2 Lookout Mountain Road, Golden, Colorado, 80401, United States

Open most days year-round during daytime hours, with reduced winter hours and closure on some major holidays. The museum charges a modest admission; THE GRAVE AND THE VIEWING TERRACE ARE FREE and can be visited without going into the museum, which surprises most visitors. Lookout Mountain Road is open year-round but is narrow, steep and icy in winter, and is heavily used by cyclists. The Pahaska Tepee gift shop and cafe keep their own hours.
