Buffalo Bill State Park
State Park · Cody, Wyoming
Buffalo Bill Reservoir and its shoreline campgrounds just west of Cody, behind Buffalo Bill Dam on the road to Yellowstone's East Entrance. Strong afternoon winds funnel down the valley and make it a known spot for windsurfing and kiteboarding, and its campgrounds are a practical base for Yellowstone trips from the east. The reservoir sits behind Buffalo Bill Dam, finished in 1910 as the Shoshone Dam and among the tallest dams in the world at the time. The park has two main campgrounds, North Shore Bay and North Fork, along with boat ramps and picnic areas beside US 14/16/20 about 9 miles west of Cody. Its setting under the Absaroka Range makes it one of the most scenic state parks in Wyoming. Summer campers use it as a cheaper base for Yellowstone's East Entrance, and in spring and autumn it is quiet.
