Buffalo Pound Provincial Park
A Valley Park On A Long Reservoir Lake With A Bison Related History, A Bison Paddock, A Beach, A Campground, Hiking Trails Along The Valley Slopes And Fishing. A Quick Escape From Moose Jaw And Regina In The Prairie Landscape Of The Qu'Appelle · Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
Buffalo Pound Provincial Park fills a stretch of the Qu-Appelle Valley about 35 km north-east of Moose Jaw, on the shore of Buffalo Pound Lake, a long, narrow reservoir cut into the prairie (confirm distance). The valley walls rise in grassy slopes dotted with aspen and chokecherry, and the name recalls the Indigenous practice of driving bison into a pound for hunting. Today the park holds a bison paddock where a herd grazes behind a fence, a beach, a campground, trails along the valley slopes and fishing for walleye and pike. For Moose Jaw and Regina residents it is a quick escape from the plain into a sheltered green valley, and the prairie sky above the ridge is wide and bright. A park entry permit is needed for day use, and camping is booked through Saskatchewan Parks (confirm all fees and dates). The setting is gentle rather than dramatic, and its pleasures come from the bison, the shade and the slow pace of a valley day.

Buffalo Pound is open all year, but the beach, campground, visitor centre and park office follow a summer season that generally runs from about the May long weekend to early September (confirm). Day use follows daylight, and campers follow the check-in and check-out times set at booking. The bison paddock is usually viewable from a loop road in daylight, though gates may close in winter or bad weather. In winter the valley is quiet, with some walking and skiing when snow allows, so check conditions before driving out. Staff answer the phone mainly in the camping season.
