Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve
The Oldest Protected Forest Reserve In Malaysia, Gazetted In 1906 And Still Standing As Genuine Rainforest In The Middle Of Kuala Lumpur'S Skyline · Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur
IN 1906 THE BRITISH GAZETTED BUKIT NANAS AS A FOREST RESERVE AND IT HAS NEVER BEEN REVOKED, WHICH MEANS THERE IS A PIECE OF GENUINE LOWLAND RAINFOREST STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF KUALA LUMPUR'S CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT - the oldest protected forest in Malaysia, surrounded on all sides by towers. IT IS NOT PLANTED PARKLAND. It is remnant forest with DUSKY LANGURS, MACAQUES, MONITOR LIZARDS AND BLACK GIANT SQUIRRELS living in it, a few hundred metres from a shopping mall. KL TOWER STANDS ON TOP OF THE HILL, four hundred and twenty-one metres of telecommunications mast with an observation deck, and most visitors ride up it without ever walking the forest underneath. THE TRAILS ARE SHORT, FREE AND ALMOST EMPTY. Standing under closed canopy and hearing traffic through it is the strangest twenty minutes in the city. The trails are free and close after storms, the tower is ticketed and open late, and the sensible plan is forest in the morning and the observation deck at dusk.
Bukit Nanas, Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
THE FOREST RESERVE IS FREE AND KEEPS DAYTIME HOURS, with entrances off Jalan Raja Chulan and from the KL Tower road; it is a few minutes' walk from BUKIT NANAS MONORAIL or DANG WANGI LRT. THE TRAILS ARE SHORT - twenty minutes to an hour - and are boardwalk and packed earth; they CLOSE IN HEAVY RAIN AND AFTER STORMS because of falling branches. KL TOWER IS A SEPARATE TICKETED ATTRACTION on top of the hill with an observation deck, a revolving restaurant and a glass SKY BOX; IT IS OPEN LATE, unlike the forest, and the view is better at dusk. A FREE SHUTTLE runs up the tower road from the gate. THE FOREST IS THE PART PEOPLE MISS. Monkeys are present and will take food. Mornings are coolest and best for wildlife.
