Bull Shoals-White River State Park
Arkansas State Park At The Foot Of Bull Shoals Dam, Where The White River Tailwater Begins. One Of The Premier Trout Tailwaters In The United States The Water That Produced A Former World Record Brown Trout And Several State Records. · Bull Shoals, Arkansas
When the Corps of Engineers closed Bull Shoals Dam in the early 1950s it turned the White River below it from a warm Ozark stream into a cold tailwater running at around fifty degrees all year, and within a decade that accident had become one of the best trout fisheries in the United States. A brown trout taken from this system held the world record for years, and the White and its sister tailwater the Norfork still draw anglers from every state in the country. The park sits at the foot of the dam with the river on one side and the lake above on the other, which means you can fish cold water for trout and warm water for bass within a mile of each other. The White River Trout Fishing Center and Rivercliff Trail interpret the whole thing. The variable that governs everything here is generation: when the dam runs its turbines the river rises fast, the wading stops and the whole character of the day changes within minutes.
153 Dam Overlook Lane, Bull Shoals, Arkansas, 72619, United States
The park is open year-round and Arkansas state parks charge no entrance fee. Trails, launches and the river access are open dawn to dusk. The visitor centre and trout fishing centre keep daytime hours with reduced winter hours. Cabins and campsites are booked through Arkansas State Parks. THE CRITICAL SCHEDULE IS NOT THE PARK'S: the dam's hydropower generation raises the river by several feet with little warning, and the generation schedule is published by the power authority. Check it before wading.
