Burntcoat Head Park

A Shoreline Park Noted For The Highest Recorded Tides In The World, With A Range Of About 16 M Between High And Low Water On The Bay Of Fundy'S Minas Basin. At Low Tide Visitors Can Walk On The Ocean Floor Among Red Rock Formations; At High Tide The Water Covers It. The Tidal Times Matter More Than The Weather. · Noel, Nova Scotia

Burntcoat Head Park is a small municipal park at the end of a gravel road near Noel, on the Minas Basin shore of the Bay of Fundy in Hants County. It is known for the highest recorded tides in the world, a range of about 16 m between high and low water. At low tide the sea drains away and you can walk out across the red mud and sandstone of the sea floor, past rock formations and stranded pools. At high tide the same ground is under water, so the tide table decides your visit more than the weather does. It suits curious families, photographers and anyone who wants to feel the scale of the Fundy tides. It is honest to say the park is modest: a lighthouse, a picnic area, a short shore path and the flats. Allow one to two hours, timed around a falling or low tide. The mud is slippery and sticky, and people do get cut off when the water returns, so always confirm tide times and park rules before you go.

The park is open seasonally, mostly from late spring to early autumn, with the grounds and shore path usually reachable in daylight. Exact dates, any staffed hours and any small parking or donation request change by year, so confirm with the municipality or a local tourism office before you plan a long drive. Out of season the gravel road and gate may be closed or unmaintained. The real schedule is the tide: the flats are walkable only around low water, and the best window is the hour or two either side of low tide. Look up tide tables for the Minas Basin for the day, walk out on a falling or low tide only, and be back on shore well before the turn.
