Butano State Park
State Park · Pescadero, California
Butano State Park lies in San Mateo County in the Santa Cruz Mountains, a few miles inland from Pescadero and the coast, reached by Cloverdale Road. A steep, quiet canyon holds second-growth redwoods, Douglas fir, thick sword ferns and a year-round creek, with a campground set beneath the trees - confirm the site layout and count. Landmarks include the Candelabra Tree, an old redwood with several trunks, and a trail network of dozens of miles - confirm. Fog and drip keep the forest damp, banana slugs appear after rain, and the canyon turns cold and dark well before sunset. Ticks and poison oak grow off the paths. It is a calm alternative to busier redwood parks, and a sound choice for hikers and campers, but not for beaches or views. Expect cool air, few crowds on weekdays, a narrow approach road and almost no phone signal. Plan on three to four hours for a forest walk, or a night or two if you camp, and bring layers, tick repellent and a headlamp.

Day use runs about 8 AM to sunset, and the campground runs on its own check-in and check-out times with reservations normally made ahead through the State Parks system - confirm both. The day-use fee is about 10 dollars a vehicle; confirm the current rate. Winter storms can close the narrow access road or bring down branches and trees, and summer fire danger can restrict stoves and fires. Fire in the wider Santa Cruz Mountains has changed some nearby parks, so check for closures. Cell signal is weak in the canyon. Check the State Parks page and road notices on the day you go.
