Butchart Gardens

National Historic Site Of Canada · Brentwood Bay, British Columbia

Butchart Gardens is a private show garden at Brentwood Bay on the Saanich Peninsula, about 20 km north of Victoria on Vancouver Island, built in a former limestone quarry. Jennie Butchart began turning the exhausted pit left by her husband's cement works into a garden from about 1904, and the Sunken Garden grew from that effort. It now covers about 22 hectares and includes the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden, the Italian Garden and the Mediterranean Garden. It is a National Historic Site of Canada and one of the most visited gardens in the world. It suits gardeners, families, couples and anyone wanting an easy, scenic half day. Be honest: it is a ticketed attraction with seasonal prices, summer crowds and tour buses at midday. Fireworks nights in summer and Christmas lights in winter are popular extras, so confirm dates and prices. Allow two to three hours, and more for an evening show.

The gardens are open daily through the year, with hours that change by season: longest in summer and shorter in winter, with evening openings on fireworks nights and during the Christmas lights season. Confirm current hours, ticket prices and any timed entry before you go, since pricing varies by season and special events. Dining rooms and afternoon tea need reservations in summer. Buses and cruise-ship tours cluster from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, so the first hour after opening and the last two hours before closing are quieter. Some areas may close during maintenance or bad weather, so check the day's notices.
