Butter Pot Provincial Park

A Barrens And Pond Park On The Avalon With The Butter Pot Hill, Lakes, A Campground, A Swimming Beach And Hiking Trails With Views Of The Avalon Highlands. A Close Family Park For St. John'S Residents, Open In Summer · Holyrood, Newfoundland and Labrador

Butter Pot Provincial Park lies on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland, a short drive off the Trans-Canada Highway roughly 50 km south-west of St. Johns, near the communities of Holyrood and Kelligrews on Conception Bay (confirm the distances and the exit). The land is typical Avalon barrens: bare granite and quartzite ridges, stunted spruce and fir, bogs, and a scatter of ponds that hold the cloud shadow all day. A rounded hill gives the park its name, since glacial rock shaped like a butter pot sits on its slope, and a short climb leads to a lookout across the highlands. The park has a lakeside campground, a swimming beach on a pond, picnic grounds and a network of trails over rock, boardwalk and peat. Fog rolls over the barrens without warning, summers are cool, and the water stays chilly even in August. It is the closest real camping ground for many St. Johns families, so July weekends fill early.

Butter Pot runs as a seasonal provincial park, with the gate, campground and washrooms normally open from about late May or June to early September, so confirm the exact dates with Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Parks before you go. Outside the season the access road may be gated, services are shut and the trails are used on foot at your own risk. Day use follows daylight, and the campground office keeps limited hours, so late arrivals should arrange check-in ahead. Fog and wind can close the lookout paths on short notice, and autumn rain turns the bog sections to mud (confirm).
