Byodo-In Temple
Temple · Kaneohe, Hawaii
A non-denominational Buddhist temple in the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park on the windward side of Oahu, dedicated in August 1968 to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. It is a replica of a nine-hundred-year-old temple at Uji in Kyoto Prefecture, established in 1052. It stands against the Koʻolau range with a reflecting pond in front of it, and the setting does most of the work.
200 Kahekili Highway, Kaneohe, Hawaii, 96744, United States
Open daily during daylight hours, generally from mid-morning to late afternoon, with a modest per-person admission. It sits inside the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, which is a working cemetery - ⚠ DRIVE SLOWLY AND QUIETLY THROUGH IT, because funerals and burials take place while visitors are arriving. The temple is non-denominational and open to everyone. Allow for the drive over the Pali from Honolulu.
