Byron Bay

Mainland Australia'S Easternmost Point, A Surf And Lighthouse Town That Grew From A Whaling Port Into The Country'S Best Known Alternative Beach Destination, With Dolphins And Seasonal Whales Visible From The Headland · Byron Bay, New South Wales

Byron Bay sits on mainland Australia's easternmost point, a former whaling and dairy port on the New South Wales north coast that reinvented itself from the 1970s onward into the country's best-known alternative beach town. Cape Byron Lighthouse marks the headland itself, with a walking track around the cape offering near-guaranteed dolphin sightings and, roughly June to November, migrating humpback whales visible from the cliff edge. The main town beach curves toward Belongil, while The Pass and Wategos give better and more sheltered breaks a short walk further round the headland. Byron's reputation runs well ahead of its size: the town itself is small, parking is genuinely difficult most days, and the main street and beachfront can feel oversold and overcrowded in peak summer and school holidays, a fair criticism worth stating plainly rather than only marketing the town's better side. Outside those peak periods, and especially at dawn on the lighthouse walk, the reputation still holds up.

Byron Bay has no gates and its beaches are open around the clock, though swimming after dark is not recommended at any of them. The Cape Byron headland reserve and lighthouse walking track are open from early morning to early evening year-round, with exact gate times shifting a little by season - check the current posted times before planning a dawn or dusk visit. The lighthouse building's internal tours run on a more limited daytime schedule and sometimes close for maintenance without much notice. Main Beach is patrolled by lifeguards only during patrol season and posted daily hours, not around the clock, so swimming outside those hours and flags is genuinely at your own risk. The monthly Byron Bay Community Market draws the biggest crowds on its one Sunday a month and the park is simply a park every other Sunday of the year.
