Cache River State Natural Area
Wetland Reserve · Belknap, Illinois
A bald cypress and tupelo swamp in the far south of Illinois, the northernmost of its kind in North America and a relic of a warmer climate that has simply never left. It is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance — a designation Illinois holds nowhere else — and it contains the state champion bald cypress, a tree over a thousand years old and among the largest east of the Mississippi.
930 Sunflower Lane, Belknap, Illinois, 62908, United States
FREE. Trails open daily, dawn to dusk. Barkhausen Wetlands Center keeps its own limited hours — check before travelling. Some trails flood seasonally.
