Caddo Mounds State Historic Site
Archaeological · Alto, Texas
Three earthen mounds raised by ancestral Caddo people more than twelve hundred years ago near Alto in the East Texas pines — a ceremonial centre at the far southwestern edge of the mound-building world that reached to the Ohio valley, and among the oldest preserved structures the Texas Historical Commission holds. An EF3 tornado destroyed the site during Caddo Culture Day in 2019; it reopened in May 2024 with a new visitor centre and a grass house rebuilt by the Caddo Nation.
1649 State Highway 21 West, Alto, Texas, 75925, United States
Generally open Tuesday through Sunday in daytime hours; ⚠ staffing at small THC sites is thin, so CALL OR CHECK BEFORE A LONG DRIVE. Roughly $5 per person. Reopened 18 May 2024 after a 2019 tornado — guides published before then describe a destroyed site.
