Caesars Head State Park

State Park · Cleveland, South Carolina

A granite overlook on the Blue Ridge escarpment where the land falls away roughly two thousand feet to the South Carolina piedmont, reached by a car park and a walk of about a minute. With Jones Gap it forms the seventeen-thousand-acre Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. For three months every autumn the overlook becomes a counting station, as thousands of hawks funnel along the escarpment on migration and volunteers stand at the rail and tally them into a national database.
