Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

Archaeological · Collinsville, Illinois

The remains of the largest pre-Columbian city north of Mexico, built by Mississippian people from around 1050 CE and abandoned by roughly 1350, on the flood plain across the river from present-day St. Louis. Some eighty earthen mounds survive of an original hundred and twenty, dominated by Monks Mound — the largest earthwork in the Americas, a hundred feet high with a base larger than the Great Pyramid's. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of only a couple of dozen in the United States.
