Cairngorms National Park

Cairngorms National Park (2003), The Largest National Park In The UK. It Holds The Highest Arctic Alpine Plateau In Britain, Five Of The Six Highest Scottish Summits, Britain'S Only Free Ranging Reindeer Herd, And Ancient Caledonian Pine Forest. · Aviemore, Scotland

The Cairngorms is the largest national park in the UK, created in 2003, and it holds the biggest area of high ground in Britain: a broad, stony plateau above about 1,000 m with arctic conditions that can arrive in any month. Aviemore is the usual base, with Glenmore, Loch Morlich and the Cairn Gorm ski area a short drive up the hill. The park also covers ancient Caledonian pine forest, Speyside glens and the only free-ranging reindeer herd in Britain. It suits walkers who like big empty country, families wanting forest and lochside trails, and anyone who can plan around weather. Allow two or three days at least. Be honest about the risks: the plateau is featureless in cloud, winter needs an ice axe, crampons and real navigation skill, and summer can still bring snow. Midges bite hard from June to August, and Aviemore is busy in school holidays and on ski weekends. Confirm the state of the funicular and any summit restrictions before you plan a day around them.

Mountain national park in the eastern Highlands centred on the Cairn Gorm plateau, with Aviemore as the main base, the funicular at Cairn Gorm, and Glenmore, Loch Morlich and Speyside around it, Aviemore, Scotland, United Kingdom

The park itself is open all year and is free to enter, with Scottish outdoor access rights covering most of the hills, lochs and forest on foot. Facilities keep their own hours. The visitor centres, cafes and the Cairn Gorm base area generally run longer in summer and on winter ski days, with shorter hours in the quiet months, so confirm current times. The funicular railway and its restrictions on leaving the top station have changed over the years - confirm current status before travelling. Reindeer centre visits at Glenmore are guided and run on set daily times, which are seasonal, so check ahead. Daylight is very short in December and long in June, and there is no lighting on hill paths.
