Calakmul

Patrimonio Mundial Mixto / Reserva De La Biosfera · Xpujil, Campeche

The capital of the Snake Kingdom, buried in the largest tropical forest reserve in Mexico and about 60 km down a side road from Highway 186. Calakmul was Tikal's great rival: the two superpowers of the Classic Maya world fought for generations through proxies and alliances, and Calakmul won more often than Tikal's own monuments admit. More than 6,000 structures have been mapped and over 100 stelae recorded, more than at any other Maya site, though only a small fraction has been excavated. What you get instead is simple. Pyramids are still climbable here, and from the top of Structure II, about 45 m high, you look over unbroken canopy to every horizon, hear howler monkeys roaring below and, on a clear morning, may see the far temples of El Mirador in Guatemala. UNESCO recognised the ruins in 2002 and the forest in 2014. The drive itself is the best wildlife viewing of the day. Plan for an early start, bring cash for three separate fees, and stay near Xpujil, not Campeche city.
