California Cavern

The first cave in California opened to the public, in 1850, and a State Historic Landmark. John Muir came and wrote about it, and Mark Twain is said to have as well; the signatures of nineteenth-century visitors are still smoked onto the walls in candle black. It is a live, wet cave, which is why it shuts for part of every year.
