Callaway Gardens
Botanical Garden · Pine Mountain, Georgia
Two and a half thousand acres of gardens, woodland and lake in the Pine Mountain ridge south-west of Atlanta, laid out from 1952 by a textile magnate who had bought worn-out cotton land and wanted to put it back. The plant that started it was a wild azalea he found growing on the property and could not identify, which turned out to be the plumleaf azalea. It is a garden, a resort and a family destination at once, and the glass butterfly conservatory is the thing most visitors remember.
