Calvert Cliffs State Park
Maryland State Park · Lusby, Maryland
A mile and three-quarters of woodland trail leading to a short public beach beneath cliffs of Miocene clay laid down between ten and twenty million years ago, when this part of Maryland was a warm shallow sea. The cliffs erode constantly and drop fossils onto the sand, which is why people walk out here: fossil shark teeth are found loose on the beach, they are free to collect, and more than six hundred species of fossil have been identified from these deposits.
Lusby, Maryland, United States
Open daily year round, generally 9 AM to sunset, with a modest per-vehicle service charge. THE BEACH IS A 1.8-MILE WALK EACH WAY FROM THE CAR PARK — there is no vehicle access to the shore and no shortcut. Allow the round trip. The car park fills on summer weekends and the gate closes when it does. THE CLIFFS THEMSELVES ARE CLOSED to climbing and digging and always have been.
