A Weekend Lunch Trip From Aguascalientes City In A Green Valley, Busiest During The Guava Season And The San Antonio Fair In June · Calvillo, Aguascalientes

Calvillo is a hill town in the western foothills of Aguascalientes, about 55 km from the state capital, and it calls itself the guava capital of Mexico. The orchards fill the valley, and the town turns the fruit into candy, paste, jam, liqueur and wine, sold from small shops around the plaza. The parish church stands over the main square, the spa pools are used by families at weekends, and the Presa La Codorniz reservoir, a few kilometres out, has fishing, picnic tables and simple lakeside restaurants. The San Antonio fair in June fills the streets with music, rides and food, and the guava harvest brings stalls and roadside sales in the cooler months. On weekdays the town is calm and you can walk the centre in an hour. It suits families and sweet-toothed visitors on a day out from Aguascalientes. It is worth the drive for guava treats, a lunch by the reservoir and a mild soak. It is not worth it for monuments or nightlife, and on June fair weekends the roads and the plaza are very crowded.
