Camp Nelson National Monument
National Monument · Nicholasville, Kentucky
A Union supply depot and fortification above the Kentucky River palisades that became one of the largest recruitment and training centres for United States Colored Troops in the country, and a refugee camp for the families who came with them. More than ten thousand enslaved men enlisted here and were freed by the act of enlisting, in a state that had not been covered by the Emancipation Proclamation. It was made a national monument in 2018, and it is a quiet, largely open site of earthworks, a restored 1840s house and a national cemetery.
