Cana Island Lighthouse

Lighthouse · Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin

An 1869 light on a small island off the Door County shore at Baileys Harbor, reached by a rock causeway that is under water as often as it is not. The 89-foot tower was encased in steel plate in 1902 when the original brick began failing, which is why it is white rather than red, and you can climb the ninety-seven steps to the gallery. It is the most photographed lighthouse in a state that has more lighthouses than any other, and the keeper's house is furnished as it was lived in.

8800 East Cana Island Road, Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, 54202, United States

Seasonal — generally open daily from late May to mid-October, roughly 10:00 to 17:00, and closed for the winter. Admission covers the grounds, keeper's house and tower climb. The causeway crossing depends on Lake Michigan water levels and a tractor-drawn wagon runs for a small extra charge when the water is high. Check current conditions before travelling.
