Canadian War Museum

National Museum Of Canada (Crown Corporation) · Ottawa, Ontario

The Canadian War Museum is Canada's national military history museum, in Ottawa on LeBreton Flats beside the Ottawa River. The angular, partly green-roofed building by the architect Raymond Moriyama opened in 2005. Its galleries follow Canadian conflict from early wars on this land through the world wars and the Cold War to Afghanistan and peacekeeping, using objects, uniforms, art, film and personal stories. The LeBreton Gallery holds tanks, artillery and vehicles, and Regeneration Hall is a bright space of reflection near the end. It suits adults, history readers, veterans and older students, and it is a serious place rather than a light attraction. Some content is graphic and sobering, including material on the Holocaust era and on Canadian Forces missions, and it is handled with care. Allow two to four hours. School groups fill the museum on weekday mornings in term time. Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal and the Canadian Museum of History are separate sights nearby. Confirm hours and prices before you go.

The museum is open most days of the year, usually from morning to late afternoon, with longer hours on some summer days and one weekday evening when opening can run later. Some winter days and holidays may be shortened or closed, so confirm the current schedule on the museum's own channels before you travel. Entry is commonly by paid admission, with a free-entry period on certain evenings - confirm the day and hours, since arrangements change. Special exhibitions may have a separate fee or timed entry. Remembrance Day on 11 November brings ceremonies and heavy crowds. Plan to arrive at least two hours before closing if you want to see the main galleries, since the LeBreton Gallery and the later galleries need time.
