Canal du Centre Boat Lifts and Strepy-Thieu
UNESCO World Heritage Site (1998): Four Hydraulic Boat Lifts Of 1888 1917 Still Working On The Old Canal, Beside The Strepy Thieu Lift Of 2002, Which Raises Whole Barges About 73 M · La Louviere, Hainaut Province
The boat lifts of the Canal du Centre, near La Louviere in Hainaut, are four hydraulic lifts built between 1888 and 1917 to carry barges up and down a steep step in the canal between the Meuse and Scheldt basins. Each lift has two huge iron tanks, or caissons, balanced on pistons: add a little more water to the upper tank and it sinks, pushing the other one up. The system works without electric motors, and the lifts still run today, which is why UNESCO listed them in 1998 as rare working industrial heritage. Beside them stands the modern Strepy-Thieu lift, opened in 2002, which raises whole barges about 73 m in one go and is often said to be among the tallest boat lifts in the world. People come for summer boat trips through the old lifts, the machine-room visit at Strepy-Thieu, and cycling the towpaths. The honest caveat: boat trips run only in the warm season, the area is post-industrial rather than pretty, sites are spread out, and without a car or bike the logistics take planning.
The four historic hydraulic lifts on the old Canal du Centre between La Louviere and Thieu, and the giant Strepy-Thieu lift on the new canal, La Louviere, Hainaut Province, Belgium
This is a seasonal visit. Boat trips on the old canal through one or more of the historic lifts, and trips into the Strepy-Thieu lift, usually run from spring or early summer to about September or October, often on set days and times, with little or nothing in winter - check the current schedule, as dates, departure points and prices change every year. The Strepy-Thieu visitor centre, with its view of the machine room and a panoramic floor, usually opens daily in season and on shorter hours or weekends only out of season (confirm). The historic lifts themselves can be seen from the towpaths at any time, free. Book boat trips ahead through the official operator of the Hainaut waterways or the La Louviere tourist office, especially for weekends and school holidays. Getting there: SNCB trains run to La Louviere, then TEC buses or a bike; a car is easiest, with parking at the lifts and at Strepy-Thieu.
