Canalside
Promenade · Buffalo, New York
⚠ THE WESTERN TERMINUS OF THE ERIE CANAL, rebuilt as public waterfront — a Buffalo redevelopment on the site where the canal met Lake Erie and made the city. ⚠ THE ORIGINAL COMMERCIAL SLIP WAS EXCAVATED AND RE-WATERED, and the site now runs concerts, paddling and markets in summer and ⚠ FREEZES INTO AN ICE RINK ON THE CANALS IN WINTER.
44 Prime Street, Buffalo, New York, 14202, United States
⚠ FREE — the waterfront, the paths, the canal interpretation and much of the programming cost nothing. ⚠ TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT DESTINATIONS DEPENDING ON SEASON. ⚠ IN WINTER THE CANALS FREEZE INTO AN ICE RINK and you skate along the line of the historic waterways — floodlit after dark, and the more memorable of the two versions. SKATE HIRE IS CHARGED; bringing your own may not be. ⚠ IN SUMMER, concerts, markets, paddling and children's events run almost daily and a good proportion are free — ⚠ CHECK THE CALENDAR BEFORE YOU COME, because an unprogrammed day is a pleasant empty waterfront and not much more. ⚠ SPRING AND LATE AUTUMN ARE THE DEAD SEASONS — no ice, no programme. ⚠ ICE CONDITIONS DEPEND ON WEATHER and the rink closes in a thaw. ⚠ The Naval and Military Park next door is SEPARATELY TICKETED. ⚠ Parking is charged; Metro Rail serves the waterfront.
