Canon de Fernandez Natural Park

A Desert Gorge Cut By The Nazas River, With Cliffs, A Hanging Bridge, Caves, A River For Swimming In Wet Months And Camping, Used As A Day Trip From Torreon, Gomez Palacio And Lerdo. A State Natural Park With A Small Fee, Hot And Dry For Most Of The Year, With Water Only In The River Season · Lerdo, Durango

Canon de Fernandez is a desert gorge cut by the Nazas river on the Durango side of the Laguna region, about 35 km from Torreon and a short drive from the town of Lerdo. Pale cliffs drop to a green strip of river, and the park has a hanging bridge, small caves, lookouts and camping spots for locals who come out for the day. In the wet months the river runs high enough to swim and cool off; in the dry months it shrinks to pools and the walls and views are the point. The park suits families from Torreon, Gomez Palacio and Lerdo, campers and anyone who likes a dry canyon landscape. It is worth the detour in the morning on a clear day in spring or autumn; it is not worth a trip at midday in summer, when the heat is severe, or for travellers short on time. The last stretch from Lerdo is rough dirt, so take a car with clearance and expect dust and wind, and bring all your water because shops are far away.

The park is usually open daily in daylight hours, commonly from morning to late afternoon, with a small entrance fee collected at the gate. Hours are set locally and shift with the season and the water, so confirm before driving. Some areas are CLOSED when the river is high or after heavy rain, and the hanging bridge or caves may be shut for repairs. Looking at the canyon from the public approach road is FREE where views allow; the gate, parking, camping and any guided walks carry charges. Weekends are busiest and weekdays can be very quiet, with little or no staff on site, so arrive with your own supplies.
