Canton Tower
Guangzhou Landmark Tower, 600 M, Among The Tallest Towers In The World · Guangzhou, Guangdong
Guangzhou's 600-metre landmark, a slender twisting lattice of white steel that narrows at its waist and flares again toward the top, nicknamed the Slim Waist. Completed in 2010 for the Asian Games on the south bank of the Pearl River, it was briefly the tallest tower in the world and remains one of the tallest. Its observation decks look straight across the river to the skyscrapers of Zhujiang New Town and down onto the Haixinsha island park, and its highest attractions give a genuine thrill: the Bubble Tram, a ring of transparent cabins that slowly circles the rim of the roof at about 450 metres, and the Sky Drop, a vertical free-fall ride near the top of the mast. At night the whole tower becomes a shifting light display that anchors one of China's most vivid skylines, best seen from the river cruises that pass beneath it or from the riverside promenades of Haixinsha and Huacheng Square. Restaurants, including a revolving dining room, sit high in the tower, and the Guangzhou Opera House, Guangdong Museum and Guangzhou Library stand just across the water.
