Canyon de Chelly National Monument

National Monument · Chinle, Arizona

A system of red sandstone canyons near Chinle in the heart of the Navajo Nation, with walls rising up to about a thousand feet above a green floor where Navajo families still live, farm and graze livestock. Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings such as White House and Antelope House sit in alcoves along the walls, and the 800-foot Spider Rock rises where two canyons meet. The monument is unique in the park system: the land belongs to the Navajo Nation and is managed together with the National Park Service. Rim drives are free and open to all, but the canyon floor can only be entered with a Navajo guide, except on the White House Trail.
