Cape d'Or

A Lighthouse On A High Headland Above The Bay Of Fundy Tides, Reached By A Gravel Road To A Small Guest House And Cafe, With Views Of Cape Chignecto And The Strong Tidal Rips. A Quiet And Scenic Stop With Some Of The Strongest Currents On The Bay · Advocate Harbour, Nova Scotia

A lighthouse stands on a high basalt headland where the Minas Channel narrows and the Bay of Fundy tides funnel past with a force that kicks up white rips at the point. French explorers named the headland the Cape of Gold after copper they found in its rock (confirm the story). A gravel road leaves Advocate Harbour and winds along the coast to the point, steep and narrow near the end, and at the end a former keepers house now serves as a guest house and cafe in season (confirm). The lighthouse dates from 1922 on the metadata record, and the views take in Cape Chignecto to the west, the long shore of the Minas Basin to the east and, on clear days, the far side of the channel. Seals and eagles are regular sights, fog often rolls in, and the tides rise and fall about ten metres or more. It is a quiet, remote stop on the Glooscap Trail that rewards a patient visitor willing to drive a rough road for a long view and a coffee at the edge of the cliff.

Cape d'Or lighthouse, on a headland of the Cape Chignecto area of the Bay of Fundy about 10 km from Advocate Harbour; coordinates approximate, Advocate Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada

The headland and the lighthouse grounds can be visited at any hour of the year, since there is no gate, but the gravel road is not maintained as a main route and can be rough, muddy or closed in winter and early spring (confirm). The guest house and cafe follow a summer season, generally from about mid May to mid October, with meal hours that change by week (confirm dates and times). The lighthouse interior is usually closed to visitors, so most of the experience is outdoors. Daylight lasts until about 9 pm in June, and fog and wind can cut visits short at any time.
