Cape Henry Lighthouse

Lighthouse · Virginia Beach, Virginia

The octagonal sandstone tower finished in 1792 at the mouth of the Chesapeake — the first lighthouse authorised, funded and built by the government of the United States, and the first public works project of the new federal republic. Washington commissioned it and Alexander Hamilton administered the contract. It stands on what is now an active military installation, next to the taller cast-iron light that replaced it in 1881 and is still working.

583 Atlantic Avenue, Virginia Beach, Virginia, 23459, United States

Generally 10 AM - 5 PM daily in season with reduced winter hours; closed in high wind and lightning. INSIDE AN ACTIVE MILITARY BASE — a REAL ID-compliant photo ID is required for every adult at the gate.
