Cape May Point State Park and Lighthouse

National Register Of Historic Places · Cape May Point, New Jersey

The southern tip of New Jersey, where the Atlantic meets Delaware Bay and the whole eastern flyway funnels down to a dead end. THE 1859 LIGHTHOUSE IS 157 FEET AND 199 STEPS AND YOU CAN CLIMB IT. Around it are two hundred and forty acres of dune, pond and woodland with a hawk watch platform that is ONE OF THE GREAT RAPTOR MIGRATION COUNTS IN NORTH AMERICA — in a good October the numbers here are extraordinary, and birders travel from Europe for it. A WORLD WAR TWO GUN BUNKER SITS ON THE BEACH, built inland in 1942 and now standing in the surf as the shoreline has moved.

215 Lighthouse Avenue, Cape May Point, New Jersey, 08212, United States

THE STATE PARK IS FREE — trails, ponds, beach, bunker and hawk watch platform — with free parking, open dawn to dusk. THE LIGHTHOUSE IS A SEPARATE OPERATION, run by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities and SEPARATELY TICKETED at roughly $12-$14; visitors routinely assume the free park includes the tower and it does not. THE CLIMB IS SEASONAL AND WEATHER-DEPENDENT — 199 steps with no lift, closed in winter, high wind and thunderstorms, with shorter hours out of season. THE FREE CAR PARK FILLS on summer weekends and throughout October, and Cape May Point borough street parking is restricted and enforced. Three miles from Cape May and not walkable.
