Cape Neddick Light
Lighthouse · York, Maine
Known universally as the Nubble, this is the lighthouse on the postcard. Congress appropriated $15,000 for a light at the Nubble in 1874, construction began in 1879, and it went into service the same year. It stands on a small rock island a hundred yards off Cape Neddick, and the whole experience is looking at it across that gap from Sohier Park - which is exactly why it photographs the way it does.
Sohier Park Road, York, Maine, 03909, United States
SOHIER PARK, the point you view it from, is open daily during daylight hours and is FREE. The gift shop and welcome centre are seasonal, roughly late spring to October. The light itself is an ACTIVE AID TO NAVIGATION on an island and IS NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AT ANY TIME - there is no bridge, no boat and no tour. Parking is free and small.
