Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge

National Wildlife Refuge · Awendaw, South Carolina

Sixty-six thousand acres of barrier island, salt marsh and open water running twenty-two miles up the coast north of Charleston, almost all of it reachable only by boat. It is the most important loggerhead sea turtle nesting ground on the Atlantic coast north of Florida, and twenty-nine thousand acres of it is designated wilderness — a rarity in the eastern United States. The draw for most visitors is Bulls Island and the mile of dead standing oak and palmetto on its eroding northern shore that everybody calls Boneyard Beach.

⚠ THE REFUGE IS ALMOST ENTIRELY WATER AND BARRIER ISLAND AND BULLS ISLAND IS REACHED ONLY BY A TICKETED CONCESSIONER FERRY from Garris Landing at Awendaw — a limited number of sailings on a limited number of days, SEASONAL, weather-dependent and sold out on good spring weekends. BOOK BEFORE YOU PLAN THE DAY. There is nothing on Bulls Island: no water, no food, no shelter and no staff. THE SEWEE VISITOR AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER at Awendaw is the mainland contact point, keeps daytime hours on a reduced week and is shared with Francis Marion National Forest. The refuge mainland areas are open dawn to dusk and free.
