Caribou Mountains Wildland Provincial Park
Alberta'S Largest Wildland Provincial Park At About 5,900 Square Kilometres; A Boreal Plateau Rising Above The Surrounding Lowlands With Extensive Peatlands, No Roads And One Of The Province'S Most Significant Woodland Caribou Ranges · Fort Vermilion, Alberta
The Caribou Mountains are not mountains in any conventional sense - they are a BOREAL PLATEAU rising about seven hundred metres above the surrounding lowlands of northern Alberta, high enough to make their own weather and to hold extensive PEATLANDS, permafrost and hundreds of lakes on top. At about five thousand nine hundred square kilometres this is ALBERTA'S LARGEST WILDLAND PROVINCIAL PARK, and one of the province's most significant WOODLAND CARIBOU ranges - the animals the plateau is named for, and a species whose Alberta populations are in serious trouble. It sits between the Peace River and Wood Buffalo National Park in country that is almost entirely roadless. There is no visitor infrastructure of any kind: no campgrounds, no trails, no signs and no staff. Access is by winter road, by float plane, or by river, and almost nobody goes.
North of Fort Vermilion, between the Peace River and Wood Buffalo, northern Alberta, Fort Vermilion, Alberta, Canada
NO GATE, NO FACILITIES, NO TRAILS AND NO STAFF. ALBERTA PARKS MANAGES IT AS A WILDLAND PROVINCIAL PARK, which means the land is protected and essentially undeveloped - random backcountry camping is permitted and nothing is provided. THE SUMMER SEASON IS ROUGHLY JULY TO EARLY SEPTEMBER, when float planes can operate and the peatlands are at their most passable, which is not saying much. WINTER ACCESS IS BY ICE ROAD AND SNOWMOBILE and is how the country is actually travelled by people who know it. THERE ARE NO ALL-SEASON ROADS INTO THE PARK. This is the traditional territory of Dene Tha', Little Red River Cree and other nations whose members hunt and trap here. NO MOTORISED ACCESS RESTRICTIONS SHOULD BE ASSUMED EITHER WAY - check current Alberta Parks direction. No cell coverage anywhere.
