Caribou-Targhee National Forest
National Forest · Idaho Falls, Idaho
Two and a half million acres across eastern Idaho and into Wyoming and Utah, formed from the Caribou and Targhee forests on land first reserved in 1891, and almost all of it inside the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. It borders both Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and the Jedediah Smith Wilderness on its eastern edge is the back of the Teton range - the side with no queue. It also holds Upper and Lower Mesa Falls on the Henrys Fork, Big Springs, and the stretch of the Henrys Fork that is one of the most famous trout rivers in the world.
1405 Hollipark Drive, Idaho Falls, Idaho, 83401, United States
Open year round with no forest entrance station and no general fee. ⚠ MESA FALLS IS THE EXCEPTION: a small day-use recreation fee applies at the Upper Falls site in season, and the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway loop is CLOSED TO CARS IN WINTER and becomes a groomed snowmobile route. THE SUPERVISOR'S OFFICE AT IDAHO FALLS keeps weekday hours, typically 8:00 to 4:30, closed on federal holidays; district offices at Ashton, Island Park, Driggs, Soda Springs, Montpelier and Malad keep their own. ⚠ THE FOREST IS IN TWO SECTIONS ABOUT THREE HOURS APART - Targhee at Island Park and Caribou near Soda Springs - and campground bookings are routinely made in the wrong one. Island Park campgrounds are reservable and fill for July and August. Free self-issue wilderness registration is at the trailheads. FIRE RESTRICTIONS ARE COMMON FROM JULY. ⚠ THIS IS GRIZZLY COUNTRY; food storage orders are in force and enforced.
