Carmel River State Beach
State Park · Carmel-By-The-Sea, California
Carmel River State Beach lies at the south edge of Carmel-by-the-Sea on the Monterey Peninsula, where the Carmel River reaches Carmel Bay. A broad curve of pale sand backs onto a lagoon and wetland that serves as a bird refuge - confirm access rules - with Point Lobos headland rising to the south. The setting is scenic, walkable and quieter than Carmel City Beach to the north, with a wide view across the bay. Be clear about what this beach is for: it is a place to walk, watch birds and enjoy the view, not a place to swim. Surf is strong, rip currents are common, the water is cold all year, and fog often hides the sun. The river mouth shifts with the seasons and can breach the sandbar after heavy rain. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and the Carmel Mission are both close, as separate places. Plan one to two hours, bring a jacket and a pair of binoculars, and keep well back from the wet sand.

The park is normally open from about 8 AM to sunset every day, and the small parking areas follow the same schedule - confirm the current times with California State Parks. Entry is commonly free at this beach, although neighbouring state parks charge for parking, so confirm whether a fee applies today. The lagoon and wetland areas may be restricted, fenced or closed to protect birds, and some trails or access points close after storms or when the river mouth floods. Fog can roll in at any hour and visibility drops fast. Parking is limited, and street parking in the neighbourhood is signed with strict rules. Check the State Parks page before you go.
