Carnegie Hall
Concert Hall · New York, New York
Built by Andrew Carnegie and opened in 1891 with Tchaikovsky conducting on the opening week, it was scheduled for demolition in 1960 and saved by a campaign led by the violinist Isaac Stern — the main auditorium carries his name because of it. The Stern Auditorium is a five-tier horseshoe with a plaster-on-brick shell and no amplification, and it is still widely held to be among the finest concert acoustics in the world.
