Carnegie Museum of Art

Art Museum · Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The art half of the building Andrew Carnegie put up in Oakland in 1895, founded on an instruction that was unusual for its moment: he wanted the museum to buy the old masters of tomorrow rather than the old masters of yesterday, which makes it arguably the first museum in the United States built to collect contemporary art. The Carnegie International, which it has run since 1896, is the oldest exhibition of international contemporary art in North America and the second oldest anywhere after the Venice Biennale. One ticket covers it and the natural history museum next door.

4400 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 15213, United States

Open most days, generally 10 AM to 5 PM with a later opening on some evenings, and closed at least one weekday — verify before travelling. One ticket admits to both the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in the same building.
