Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area
State Park · Tracy, California
Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area is a California State Parks off-highway vehicle area in the dry eastern foothills of the Diablo Range, reached by Corral Hollow Road between Livermore and Tracy. It is built for motorcycles, ATVs and four-wheel-drive vehicles on steep, dusty hillside trails, and that is its whole purpose - it is not a place for walkers, picnickers or sightseers. Riders need a street-legal or OHV-registered machine with a green or red OHV sticker, a helmet and a spark arrestor - confirm the exact rules and sticker seasons. Summers are very hot and dry with little shade, fire closures are common, and dust and noise are constant. Trail and area closures change often, and the ghost town of Tesla, a former coal mining town, lies in the surrounding hills - confirm access and status before you plan around it. Expect a long, hot, dusty day rather than a scenic stroll, and dress for it.

OHV parks like this one usually open in the morning and close around sunset, with set days for the main riding areas and seasonal limits that follow the weather and the fire calendar - confirm the current hours and open days on the State Parks page, because parts of the park have closed for months for drought, fire danger, wet-weather damage or maintenance. Entry is normally through a staffed gate and may be restricted when the park reaches capacity. Rain can close trails for days to protect the clay soil, and very hot or windy days can bring red-flag closures. Call or check the official page the morning you leave, since a long drive to a closed gate is common here.
