Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge
National Wildlife Refuge · McBee, South Carolina
Forty-five thousand acres of longleaf pine and wiregrass sandhills between Camden and Cheraw, established by executive order in March 1939 on land that had been farmed to exhaustion. Longleaf pine savanna once covered a vast sweep of the American South and now survives in fragments, which makes this refuge one of the larger surviving pieces of a nearly vanished ecosystem. It holds one of the strongest red-cockaded woodpecker populations anywhere.
