Cartagena Old Town and San Felipe Fortress
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Port, Fortresses And Group Of Monuments, Cartagena (1984). A Spanish Colonial Port City Enclosed By Seven Kilometres Of Stone Walls, With The Largest Spanish Fortress In The Americas, Castillo San Felipe De Barajas, On The Hill Behind It. · Cartagena, Bolivar
Cartagena is the best-preserved walled city on the Caribbean coast of South America, and the reason is simple: Spain made it the main port for shipping Andean gold and silver home, so it was fortified heavily, repeatedly, and for centuries. Seven kilometres of stone walls still enclose the old town, with balconied houses, plazas, churches and cobbled streets inside, while Getsemani, the former working district just outside the inner walls, now holds the murals, hostels and street life. On a hill behind the city, the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas is the largest Spanish fortress in the Americas, a maze of tunnels and ramps built so that cannon fire covered every approach. It is also hot, humid and busy: cruise ships dock here, vendors press hard, and the best hours are early morning and the hour before sunset. Expect to be approached often by sellers and tour touts, and to enjoy it most if you slow down, walk the quieter lanes of Getsemani, and treat the fortress and the islands as separate half-day outings rather than one rushed list.

The walled streets and plazas are open at all hours and cost nothing, and the walls themselves can be walked along most of their length, best at sunset. The Castillo San Felipe has its own ticket and its own opening hours, roughly from morning to late afternoon daily, and it is shaded almost nowhere, so arrive at opening. Churches, museums and the convents keep shorter hours and some close on Mondays or for midday services, so confirm locally. Cruise days fill the center by late morning. Getsemani is liveliest after dark.
