Casa Batllo

UNESCO World Heritage Site (Works Of Antoni Gaudi, Extended 2005), A Townhouse Of 1877 Remodelled By Gaudi Between 1904 And 1906 On The Passeig De Gracia · Barcelona, Catalonia

A townhouse on the Passeig de Gracia that Gaudi remodelled in 1904 and which looks like something that grew rather than something built. There is not a straight line on the front: the facade is a wash of broken ceramic and coloured glass over undulating stone, the balconies read as masks or skulls depending on who is looking, and the roof is a scaled ridge that the city has always read as a dragon's back with a cross driven into it. Inside, the same logic runs through the plan. A central lightwell is tiled in graded blue, dark at the top and pale at the bottom, so the light falls evenly on every floor; windows grow larger as they descend for the same reason; doors, handles and banisters are shaped to the hand. It is the most expensive house museum in Spain and it is sold in tiers, so read what your ticket actually covers before buying, and go at opening or in the last slot, because the route runs one way through a small house and by midday it moves at the pace of the group ahead of you.

Passeig de Gracia 43, Barcelona, Catalonia, 08007, Spain

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The structure: open daily, including most public holidays, on TIMED ENTRY SLOTS with last admission well before closing, and longer hours in high season. DIFFERENT TICKET TIERS GRANT ACCESS TO DIFFERENT PARTS of the house, so the route length varies with what you bought rather than with the hour. Evening rooftop sessions run seasonally as separate ticketed events. The facade outside is public and lit at night. Confirm the tier inclusions.
