Casa Grande Ruins National Monument

National Monument · Coolidge, Arizona

The Great House of the Hohokam people, a four-storey building of caliche mud built around 1350 CE in the desert between Phoenix and Tucson, with walls aligned to the sun and moon. In 1892 it became the first archaeological site protected by the United States government, and since 1932 it has stood under a large protective roof. A short level path circles the Great House and the remains of the compound, a ballcourt and platform mound, and a small museum tells the story of the farmers who irrigated this desert with hundreds of miles of canals. It is a short detour off Interstate 10 and one of the best places in Arizona to understand the Hohokam.
