Castillo de San Marcos National Monument

National Monument · Saint Augustine, Florida

The oldest masonry fort in the continental United States, built by the Spanish between 1672-1695 to protect St. Augustine — the oldest European-established city in the US. Constructed of coquina (a unique seashell limestone), the fort's walls absorbed cannonballs rather than shattering, making it virtually impregnable. The fort served four different nations and witnessed 300+ years of American history.
