Castle Clinton National Monument
National Monument · New York, New York
A circular red sandstone fort completed in 1811 on an artificial island 200 feet off Manhattan, built against a British invasion that never came, and joined to the mainland by landfill in the 1850s. ⚠ IT HAS BEEN A FORT, AN OPERA HOUSE, AN IMMIGRATION DEPOT THAT PROCESSED EIGHT MILLION PEOPLE, AN AQUARIUM AND A TICKET OFFICE — and it is now the last of those, selling Statue of Liberty ferry tickets inside its own walls.
Battery Park, New York, New York, 10004, United States
⚠ FREE — a National Park Service site with no admission charge, and the exhibition inside is free. Generally open daily on National Park Service hours, which are shorter than the surrounding park's. ⚠ THE STATUE OF LIBERTY AND ELLIS ISLAND FERRY TICKET OFFICE IS INSIDE THE WALLS, which means the fort fills with a queue from mid-morning — GO BEFORE 8:30 A.M. to see it as a monument rather than a booking hall. Those ferry tickets are a separate commercial transaction and should be booked online in advance. ⚠ HOURS NOT VERIFIED FOR THIS FILE.
