Castle Crags State Park
State Park · Castella, California
Castle Crags State Park lies in far northern California, just off Interstate 5 near Dunsmuir and not far south of Mount Shasta. Its signature is a cluster of pale granite spires and domes that rise high above the Sacramento River canyon, glacier-scoured and bare against a forest of conifers. Trails climb from the forest floor toward the base of the crags and to viewpoints, and on clear days the hike gives a view of Mount Shasta (confirm which trail). The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the park (confirm the section), so hikers meet long-distance walkers here. The hiking is steeper than the roadside setting suggests, summer is hot and dry, rattlesnakes and ticks are present, and winter brings snow that can shut trails and slow the road. Camping is available (confirm sites and season), and the river nearby is a draw for anglers. Confirm trail names and lengths, fees and current closures before you go.

Castle Crags is a day-use and camping state park with a gated entrance in daylight hours, and the general pattern has been sunrise to sunset for day use, though a staffed kiosk is not always open - confirm the current hours and fee procedure with California State Parks. Trails are open only in daylight and may be closed or hazardous after snow, ice or storms, especially higher up. In winter the park road and some trailheads can be difficult to reach, and visitor services are limited. Campground reservations, check-in times and seasons follow State Parks rules and fill early in summer. Wildfire smoke and closures can affect the whole region from midsummer to fall, so check conditions first.
