Castlepoint
A Working Lighthouse On A Dramatic Limestone Reef On The Wairarapa Coast, Built In 1913 And Still Operating, With A Walkable Reef At Low Tide, A Lagoon Safe For Swimming Behind It And A Steep Climb To Castle Rock Giving A View Over The Whole Formation · Castlepoint, Wellington
Castlepoint is a tiny settlement on the wild Wairarapa coast, built around a lighthouse that has operated continuously since 1913 atop a dramatic limestone reef running out into the Pacific. The reef, exposed at low tide, can be walked almost to its outer end, its layered rock holding visible marine fossils and small rockpools, while a sheltered lagoon tucked behind the reef gives a calm, genuinely swimmable alternative to the open ocean swell. Castle Rock, a steep limestone bluff rising directly behind the beach, can be climbed on a formed but exposed track to a sweeping view over the whole reef, the lighthouse and the open coastline in both directions. The lighthouse itself, at 23 metres one of the tallest still working on the New Zealand mainland, is not open for interior visits but remains a striking, frequently photographed structure from the beach and reef below. It is a genuine small fishing settlement, not a built-up tourist stop, sitting roughly ninety minutes from Masterton on a quiet stretch of coast that most Wairarapa wine-country visitors never make time for.
The Wairarapa coast, about 1.5 hours from Masterton, Castlepoint, Wellington, New Zealand
Castlepoint has no gate and the reef, beach and lagoon are accessible at any hour of daylight, though the reef walk and Castle Rock climb are only sensible in daylight and calm weather. The lighthouse is a working aid to navigation and has no public opening hours for its interior at any time. Reef walking and the sea caves at its outer end are tide-dependent and only safe within a window either side of low tide - check a tide table before setting out, not an earlier trip's memory. There is no cafe or shop on site; the nearest fuel, food and supplies are back in Masterton, so bring what is needed for the day.
