Cataract Falls
Waterfall · Spencer, Indiana
The largest waterfall by volume in Indiana, on Mill Creek in Owen County above Cagles Mill Lake, in two separate drops about half a mile apart — Upper Falls with roughly a twenty-foot fall over a broad limestone shelf, and Lower Falls with about eighteen. A covered bridge of 1876 stands over the creek between them. It is part of Lieber State Recreation Area and the flow is entirely dependent on recent rain, which is the single fact that determines whether the visit is worth making.
2605 Cataract Road, Spencer, Indiana, 47460, United States
Open daily, dawn to dusk, as part of Lieber State Recreation Area. A per-vehicle gate fee applies, higher for out-of-state plates. FLOW IS ENTIRELY RAINFALL-DEPENDENT and the falls can be reduced to very little in late summer.
