Catemaco and Los Tuxtlas

Reserva De La Biosfera Los Tuxtlas · Catemaco, Veracruz

Catemaco is a volcanic crater lake in southern Veracruz surrounded by the northernmost rainforest in the Americas, and the acknowledged witchcraft capital of Mexico. Its brujos and curanderos have practised here for generations in a mix of indigenous, African and Catholic ritual, and they hold an annual congress on the first Friday of March that draws practitioners and clients from across the country. The lake has islands, one populated by macaques descended from a university research colony. Around it the Los Tuxtlas biosphere reserve rises into cloud forest, and the Gulf beaches below are black volcanic sand. It is a long way from anywhere, about 2.5 hours from Veracruz city, and cheap: lakeside hotels from around MXN 600 (roughly USD 33), a boat circuit commonly MXN 150-400, and Nanciyaga about MXN 100-200. Veracruz state carries a travel advisory, so check current advice and travel by day. Agree every price before a consultation or boat trip starts.
